Frank Milton Armington

Excellent condition. Purchased from a New York descendant of the artist. Never framed.

Canadian painter and etcher. Born at Fordwich in Ontario in 1876, Frank Armington studied art in Toronto under J. W. L. Forster in 1882, and was also a student of Constant and Laurens in Paris at the Académie Julian in 1899, and again 1905-07.

Frank married fellow artist Caroline Helena Wilkinson and lived in Paris for most of his career. The artist couple returned to Canada, however, to teach in Winnipeg from 1901 to 1905. Robert Fulton Logan was among Frank’s students.

The Armingtons returned to Paris in 1906 and Frank quickly established himself as a fine landscape and figure artist in both etching and painting. He was a full member of the Société Nationale de la Gravure Originale en Noir, the Société des Gravures Francais and the American Federation of Arts. He was elected Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1920. His original etchings and paintings were often included in major French and American exhibitions.

Frank Armington exhibited widely in France, the U.S.A., and in England. He received an Hon. Mention at the Paris Salon in 1908 and is represented in numerous public collections in both Europe and North America. Frank and Caroline left Paris for New York after the outbreak of WWII and it was there he died in 1941.
