Very good condition; presented in the original European frame with some superficial scuffing.
The signature is P. Bach – the “P” and “B” combined in monogram – followed by the remaining letters “ach”. The dress of the largest figure in the painting appears to be German but the seacoast suggests Flanders or Normandy.
Paul Bach was a German painter, born in Dresden and died in Berlin. He studied at the Dusseldorf Academy and after a stay in Paris he lived and worked in Munich for ten years. During this time he met and became a friend of Lovis Corinth. Bach followed Corinth to Berlin where the two artists became members of the Berliner Secession. He became known for his decorative still life, atmospheric landscapes, and city views.
The portrait below was by his good friend Lovis Corinth (Franz Heinrich Louis Corinth) who had painted Bach in 1901 as a hunter (dressed as a German officer). Corinth was an internationally respected artist whose work is held in numerous public and private collections throughout Germany and internationally. His friendship with Paul Bach suggests that artist, too, was respected in his own right.
