The artist was born 1922 in Sheffield. He studied art at the Sheffield College of Art and at the Royal College of Art under the guidance of Carel Weight.

From 1950-87 he was a lecturer in painting and drawing at the Cleveland College of Art in Hartlepool. In 1957 he was included in Jack Beddington’s volume Young Artists of Promise and in the following year he became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists. He has exhibited extensively at the Royal Academy, The Royal Society of Portrait painters, The Leicester Galleries and elsewhere in mixed exhibitions. He received a number of important commissions in his career as an artist, most notably in 1992 when he executed two paintings for the Sultan of Oman.

There were a number of important one man exhibitions – The Gray Art Gallery Hartlepool in 1967; Billingham Art Gallery in 1970; and Middlesbrough Art Gallery in 1984. His work is now in many public and private collections both in the UK and overseas.

Provenance: The artist’s studio sale in 2004. (Approximately 200 paintings, about 150 sketches, and artist’s materials belonging to the artist, were included in a sale by Anderson & Garland, Newcastle fine art auctioneer, on June 29, 2004. At the time of that consignment, Stephen Crowther was in his eighties and living in a Norfolk nursing home. The auction received special attention because of correspondence with film director Ridley Scott, a former Hartlepool student of the artist who had admired a painting he observed over Crowther’s shoulder in a BBC interview with Crowther about Scott’s career.
