Ernest George was an architect, etcher and water-colour painter. Born in London on 13th June 1839. Educated at Brighton and Reading. Studied at the R.A. Schools and won the R.A. gold medal for architecture 1859. Exhibited at the principal London galleries from 1859, mainly at the R.A. and Suffolk Street. Received many important commissions, chiefly for buildings in England, but also France and India. Painted and etched in his spare-time including views in Belgium, France, Italy and London. Elected R.E. 1881, A.R.A. 1920, R.A. 1917, P.R.I.B.A. 1908-09 and knighted in 1911. Lived in London and died on 8th December 1922. – from Dictionary of British Artists Working 1900-1950.
In addition to the exhibitions cited above, Fine Art Society, London had several one-man shows featuring George’s “holiday watercolors”.
A watercolor of Chichester sold in 2000 for $2,040 at Christie’s South Kensington.
