This lithograph is in very good condition; uniform paper darkening consistent with depression era prints.

Gordon Grant was a marine and naval painter, born in San Francisco. He studied at the Heatherly Art School of London; his specialty was depictions of historic sailing vessels, such as Old Ironsides (1927). According to Wikipedia, “His best known work is likely his watercolor of the USS Constitution. He also produced war time posters during WW I, and illustrations for books such as Penrod, and magazine covers for periodicals such as Saturday Evening Post and illustrations for Boys’ Life. He was the cover designer for the first edition of the Boy Scout Handbook in 1911.” His work is held by numerous museums, art galleries, and the Library of Congress.

This print was issued by Associated American Artists (AAA), a New York art gallery, c. 1940. “The gallery marketed art to the middle and upper-middle classes, first in the form of affordable prints and later in home furnishings and accessories, and played a significant role in the growth of art as an industry.” – Wikipedia. Most of the leading names among American etchers and lithographers – were featured in AAA print issues.
