A printed label, verso, states that “This is an original Oil-painting by the artist – Berthold Harris – Born in 1885 at Vienna, Austria, his extraordinary talent for drawing and painting was already recognized in his early youth. Following his teachers’ suggestion he attended the Industrial School of Arts. To develop further his painting he made for instance travels to Italy which brought him a lot of new ideas for his work. He exhibited in the Viennese Glaspalast and Burggarten.” Research has revealed other paintings with the identical label.
A similar painting (in subject, composition, and color), signed C. Bertold, was offered for sale by a New York gallery attributing the painting to Carl Bertold, born in Switzerland in 1870. Carl Bertold studied at the School of Fine Arts in Lausanne, Switzerland and was best known for his paintings of the Alpines. The cited C. Bertold’s painting was c. 1952, according to the gallery. Both the C. Bertold and Bertold Harris paintings were possibly (probably?) painted by the same hand.
Despite the ambiguity surrounding the signature, this is an appealing large painting.
