Thomas Marjoribanks Hay was an Edinburgh landscape painter who worked largely in watercolour. His earlier works have a detailed precision which soon broadened into a looser, wetter style. He worked in the east coast villages, in Perhshire and in the Central Highlands. He was good at painting hills and mountains shrouded in cloud or mist, in restrained colours.- from The Dictionary of Scottish Painters.

Hay was elected R.S.W. in 1895, and exhibited 59 pictures in the society’s exhibitions. He showed another 88 pictures at the R.S.A., and was represented in most important British galleries during the approximately forty years that he worked. He lived in Edinburgh and died there in 1921.

NOTE: The example below of T. M. Hay’s work (1921) was one of the first watercolors I purchased (over fifty years ago) and it remains a part of my personal collection. In my opinion, there is no better representation of Scottish early 20th century watercolour painting than the work of Thomas Marjoribanks Hay! His work retained the best qualities of traditional Scottish art while incorporating elements of impressionism.
