This drawing is in great shape. Unsigned but unquestionably from a Max Hofler sketchbook. This would have been a preliminary sketch for a larger work in oil, for which he was best known.

Hofler was born in London. Was educated at Archibishop Tenison’s Grammar School and with special permission at Heatherley’s School of Fine Art (aged 14). Studied at St. Martin’s School of Art, then for five years in the evening at the Royal Academy Schools. Exhibited at the Royal Academy, ROI and others. Was a founder member of the Wapping Group of Artists and Harrow Art Society. His work is represented in a number of public collections (see Art UK). – Louise Kosman Modern British Art.

I owned a large oil landscape by Max Hofler that I liked, but this drawing appeals to me more. The Old Town, Barnard Castle, and The Stone Bridge, Richmond Castle, both illustrated below. are exceptonal examples from the artist’s large body of work – in my opinion.

Also by this artist:

The Old Town, Barnard Castle – Oil on board
The Embankment London – Oil on board
The Stone bridge, Richmond Castle, Yorkshire – Oil on canvas
Ships on a river – Oil on board
Sunlight and Shadow, Wallingford, Berkshire – Oil on board
