Very good condition; painting and frame. There is some crazing (craquelure) in the center of the painting observable in the images (also some excessive light reflection) and on close examination. There is no paint loss and no change in condition since the original frame was replaced about forty years ago. The title was inscribed on the old frame.
Born in Edinburgh, Robert Hope studied at the Edinburgh School of Design, the RSA schools and Academie Julian Paris. He started as a Lithographic draughtsman but soon turned to painting. His work included portraits, landscapes and views of Edinburgh in oil. Associated wit the East Linton group of painters and most of his landscapes are of East Linton. He was in addition a muralist and book illustrator. Elected ARSA in 1911; RSA in 1925.
The Silken Gown sold at Bonhams, Edinburgh in 2006 for $28,838. His landscape works bring considerably lower prices at auction. Expect to pay between $500 and $2000 for his smaller paintings in a gallery, assuming very good to excellent condition.
Robert Hope’s reputation was made by his portraits and figure studies of ladies in luscious gowns but his landscapes, largely painted in East Lothian are worthy additions to a collection of Scottish art (YouTube video).
