Very good condition. A minor scuff or two which are not conspicuous. A name plate was apparently removed from the frame leaving two small holes in the bottom, middle portion of the ornate frame.
Leslie Hunter, the artist after whom this painting was styled, was a painter in oil of genre, landscape, still life and portraits. Born on 7th August 1877 at Rothesay, Isle of Bute, Scotland, his family emigrated to California in 1890 and it was not until 1906 that he returned to Glasgow. First one-man show held in 1916 at the Reid Gallery, Glasgow. Associated with S. J. Peploe and J. D. Fergusson. Travelled widely visiting France and Italy, and in 1924 and 1929 America. Died in Glasgow on 6th December 1931. – from Dictionary of British Artists Working 1900-1950 by Grant M. Waters.
Note: This painting is no doubt either a copy or in the style of Leslie Hunter. The signature looks good, but the board was developed and manufactured after 1945. Also, the missing brass plate may have been inscribed “AFTER George Leslie Hunter.” It’s conceivable it was painted to deceive, but unlikely – given the medium on which it was painted.
Although it was not painted by the great Scottish Colourist, it was executed by a professional hand and is a faithful imitation of Hunter’s style and palette. It is priced accordingly.
