There are three tiny spots in the sky that may be paint loss revealing white primer (difficult to ascertain even under magnification), otherwise excellent condition. Simple wood frame and fabric liner.
This painting may have been framed in France, as the artist’s board is stamped “Lille”. Georg Kern aka Georg Baselitz exhibited early in his career in that country featuring works related to the sea. He would change his name to Georg Baselitz in 1961. There is a possibility this work is by Kern/Baselitz, who has achieved fame as a neo-expressionist painter of figures. Obviously, it’s not like any painting by Baselitz you’re likely to ever see – indeed, it’s not Baselitz – it’s Georg Kern – before he became Georg Baselitz. If, indeed, it is by THAT G. Kern. Why did he change his name? Was there a stylistic change for which he felt the need for a new identity? Certainly, the followers of Georg Baselitz will not likely be attracted to this painting, unless they are also art historians with an interest in the evolution of an artist.
