Very good condition; original gold-gilt frame. The original matt has faded with the years (over 100!) and should be replaced but it hangs proudly as is.

Born Aberdeen and trained as an architect. He practiced for many years before settling in Glasgow to work as an artist. Like many Scottish artists of his generation, he was influenced by the Dutch 19th century school and his coastal and marine watercolours reveal a debt to Maris, Weissenbruch and Roelofs in their ‘wet’ technique and restrained colours. He painted Scottish fishing villages, Dutch coastal scenes and canals, market-places and church interiors. He worked largely in watercolour. Died Glasgow. – from The Dictionary of Scottish Painters 1600-1960, Harris and Halsby.

Laing exhibited widely and was elected to the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1885. He showed 55 works at the Royal Scottish Academy, 114 at the RSW, 80 at the Glasgow Institute, 21 at the Royal Academy as well as at the Fine Arts Society, the Dowdeswell and Grosvenor Galleries and at prestigious galleries in both Manchester and Liverpool.

James Garden Laing was very successful during his career and his work continues to be very popular. A Laing watercolor sold by Christie’s in 2007 for 600 GBP, exceeded their estimate of 200-300 GBP.
