Excellent condition; purchased in Edinburgh c. 1971 and was in portfolio for over twenty-five years before being framed in the mid 1990s. This painting is from my personal collection and has been hung since framing – avoiding bright light.
James Macmaster was a Glasgow landscape and coastal painter; he specialized in fishing scenes with boats in harbour, fishing villages and scenes of unloading the catch. He worked in both oil and watercolour, the latter being painted in a ‘wet’ Glasgow manner. His work is similar to that of Andrew Black and James McNiven. — From The Dictionary of Scottish Painters.
The record price for James MacMaster is believed to be $4,270 for High Street, Elie, sold at Lyon & Turnbull Edinburgh in 2006. Another, A Summer Morning, West Wemyss, signed and inscribed, watercolour, 15.75″ x 23 5/8″ was sold at Bonhams in 2007. His views of the East Neuk of Fife, of which these two sales are examples, always elicit great interest when they are offered for sale.
