William Miller’s work appears regularly in the British art market and there is a listing for him in at least one art reference book. He painted landscape, seascape, and allegorical subjects in oil, watercolor, gray wash, and pen and ink – pre WWII. His drawing was exceptionally strong . A brown wash drawing of Edinburgh Castle (previously in this collection) was signed “William Miller” and may have been executed by a William Miller born Edinburgh, Scotland 1796 – died Sheffield, England 1882. That Miller was an engraver of landscapes and figures. He studied in Edinburgh and London and from 1821 worked in Edinburgh. The possibility of the artists being father and son should be considered, given the similarity of subjects, style, and signature.
Also in this collection: George Street, Edinburgh, from St. Andrew Street (pen and ink) and Jubilee Clock, South Queensferry (monochrome wash); both signed and dated, unframed – NFS.
