Fair to Good faded condition; sold with original gold matt but without the damaged frame. This is a modest watercolor but it will look much better with the removal of the damaged frame.
This painting was bought from a Montreal Gallery in 2001. The artist is unknown but presumed to be English, based on style of both the watercolor and the frame. Before WWI, it was common practice in Britain to require watercolors submitted for exhibition to be housed in gold frames and mounts. The watercolor is inscribed verso “To Ella and Harry September 2nd 1947 from Mrs. L. A. Pickering”. It can be assumed the watercolor was exhibited at some point but retained by the artist before being gifted by his wife. It is a modest work probably executed between 1890 and 1920.
