Fair to good condition; even, dark paper toning, water damage in the margins. and paper loss in the right margin – no damage to the plate impression beyond the toning of the paper. The image is lighter than the original. Sold unmated and unframed. An old label of the original Philadelphia gallery has been retained.
A native of Stuttgart, Germany, Roth was a student of James D. Smillie in New York City. He won many prizes including a silver medal at the Panama-Pacific Exposition (1915) and at the Salmagundi Club in 1917 and 1918. His work is in the Uffizi Gallery, the Library of Congress, the Boston Museum of Fine Art and the New York Public Library.
