This tiny painting was discovered behind another watercolor. It was fixed to the back of an albumen print of a gentleman. The condition is excellent. The image colors and lighting do not show the watercolor to its best advantage. It should look great with a sympathetic matt and frame.

The artist may be Sir William Stirling-Maxwell, a Scottish historical writer, art historian, and politician. Sir William’s son, Sir John Stirling-Maxwell became an honorary member of both the Royal Watercolur Society (RWA), London and the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW), Edinburgh.

A photograph of Sir William Stirling-Maxwell by Thomas Annan, dated 1870 is included in the Wikipedia article linked below. Sir William died in Venice in 1878 but was buried in Lecropt Churchyard, 2.4 miles west of the Wallace Monument.
