Very good restored condition. Presented in what is believed to be the original gilt frame.
From The Dictionary of Victorian Painters, “Landscape and animal painter. A self-taught artist, he lived in Southampton, and painted mostly in Hampshire and the New Forest. His work falls into two distinct categories; firstly, woodland scenes with gipsies, rustic figures and animals, and secondly, beach or coastal scenes with boats and fisherfolk. He was a prolific artist, and tended to repeat certain formulae. Exhib. mostly at SS (338 works), also at RA 1820-43, and BI. His work is in many English provincial museums.”
Provenance: Purchased in 1987 from Sloan’s Autioneers, Bethesda, Maryland by the previous owner who represented that the consignee was C. J. Smith, U. S. Secretary of Transportation during the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Administation {sic}*. Acquired by the present owner on August 30, 1997 from Anonymous Vendor #60, Yesteryears Antique Mall, Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
*The first U. S. Secretary of Transportation, Alan S. Boyd was appointed by Lyndon Johnson, succeeded by John Volpe. It may be that C. J. Smith was an Assistant Secretary.
