Very good. Textured board (similar to Masonite) had sustained some minor damage prior to its use. Also, there is a small area of missing paint in the lower left corner that will be covered when framed – image cropped to show the view when framed. Worthy of framing and hanging!
This is the second painting of Scottish subjects signed W. Stewart this collector has owned. The other was a watercolor of seaside cottages in Largo, Fife. It is likely they were both painted by the same hand, but William Stewart was/is a common name with several artists of that name working as early as 1822. This painting is in a traditional style (19th century) but with a modern interpretation. Given the type of board on which it was painted, it probably dates between 1935 and 1950.
