This painting is in very good condition. There is some loss of paint along the edges where the canvas was rubbed by an earlier frame. A superb example of Alice Stoddard’s portraiture. Regrettably, the subject is unknown. This painting will add richness and impact to any collection of American 20th Century art.
Born in Watertown, Connecticut, Alice Stoddard was a landscape, portrait, and marine painter. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with Thomas Eakins, Thomas Anshutz and William Merritt Chase. She also studied at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women. In 1948, she married artist Joseph Pearson.
