The watercolor is in very good condition, but there is a small mark on the matte. The frame though old is not original to the watercolor and has a few scuffs.  The backing board bears the name “Alfred Gomersal Vickers”, twice. Apparently, the artist signed the original backing and the signature was copied when the painting was re-framed. Typical of early English watercolors, there is no signature on the drawing itself and we have not inspected the painting out of the frame.  This watercolor was acquired from a Scottish antique shop over 30 years ago.

From the Dictionary of Victorian Painters: “Landscape painter; son of Alfred V (q.v.). Like his father, he exhib. mostly at BI, also RA 1827-36, SS and NWS. In 1833 he visited Russia to make drawings for Charles Heath’s Annuals. Painted views in England, France, Switzerland, Poland and Moscow. Works by him are in the VAM, Leicester and the Nat. Gall. Dublin. He died young, and his output was not large. Unless his pictures are signed ‘A.G. Vickers’ they are often confused with those of his father. His studio sale was held at Christie’s, February 16-17, 1837.”

This watercolor was discovered in the 1990s while browsing an antique shop in an East Neuk, Fife fishing village. I didn’t buy it but phoned from the U. S. and asked my son, who was still traveling in Scotland, to visit the shop and make the purchase! I must have liked it a lot! (And I still do).
