Painting is in excellent condition. A gift from the artist from his personal collection.
Born in the former Yugoslavia (now Croatia), Ivan Nino Kamalic spent most of his young life on the island of Losinj. After escaping Communist Yugoslavia with a friend, Kamalic spent two years as an artist’s apprentice, learning painting and sculpture, crafts that would later establish him as a respected artist.
After his apprenticeship in Italy, Ivan Kamalic left for the United States, looking to set up an art studio. He was drafted into the US Army in 1965 and was stationed both in Germany and the United States. He participated in the Combat Arts Program and made numerous paintings and sculptures for the Army that can still be seen on bases across the country.
Kamalic also did topographic drawings and mapping of strategic areas for the Army and was a sharpshooter. He was honorably discharged in 1967, and headed for New York to study and teach.
The artist attended the School of Visual Arts and the Art Students League in New York. His main focus was on oil painting and stone sculpture. He also taught art in public schools in the city during the winter, while maintaining a studio in New York and Rockport.
